CyberKnife SBRT

Laser-Edge Treatment for Prostate Cancer

CyberKnife® is an incision-free, robotic procedure for men who require radiation treatment for prostate cancer. The Urology Group is the region's only provider.

Overview

Most men don’t expect to hear the words “you have cancer” and are unsure of the best treatment path. The nationally recognized experts at The Urology Group can help. The Urology Group is one of the largest, most experienced groups of physicians caring for prostate cancer patients in the United States. And we are the region’s only provider of CyberKnife SBRT exclusively for prostate cancer.

CyberKnife® stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is an incision-free, robotic procedure that delivers high doses of radiation with extreme accuracy, for fewer treatments. It is one of the most advanced treatments available for prostate cancer and more than 90,000 patients around the world have undergone the procedure.

Why CyberKnife SBRT?

For men with prostate cancer who require radiation treatment, CyberKnife may be an appropriate option. Key benefits include:

  • Despite its name, CyberKnife requires no cutting.
  • Fewer treatments – typically five sessions compared with 40 or more for traditional radiation.
  • It can be completed in one week, not months.
  • It delivers high doses of radiation with pinpoint accuracy, meaning minimum effect to the rest of the body.
  • It enables a shorter recovery time.

The Urology Group offers one of the most advanced independent centers of excellence for urologic care in the country. This singular focus means our team of physicians and staff is specialized to deliver the best possible treatment for prostate cancer patients.

How CyberKnife SBRT Works

Despite its name, CyberKnife involves no cutting and offers a non-invasive alternative to surgery for many patients. Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) involves high doses of radiation delivered in a small number of treatment sessions. This is what a patient should expect:

  • Before treatment, small metallic markers are placed in the prostate so the CyberKnife robot can accurately monitor the prostate’s position at all times. The markers are inserted during a procedure similar to a prostate biopsy, through the rectum.
  • About a week after the marker placement, both a CT scan and an MRI are taken. The images are merged using specialized software to provide a clear picture of the prostate and neighboring normal tissues (urethra, bladder, rectum and nerve bundles), from which the physicians create a treatment plan.
  • A robotic arm delivers pencil-thin beams of radiation that can be directed from potentially thousands of angles, allowing a high dose to bombard cancerous cells with great accuracy and minimizing exposure to healthy neighboring tissues. Because the technology can detect prostate motion during treatment (the prostate can move without warning and even with respiration), the CyberKnife robot continuously corrects the aim of the radiation beam, further ensuring accuracy.
  • Each session will last less than one hour and is painless. No urinary catheter is necessary. On treatment days, patients are typically asked to perform an enema prior to the session.

Is CyberKnife SBRT for You?

What you should know:

Selecting a prostate cancer treatment is a personal decision. When making that decision, patients should understand the nature of their diagnosis, the process they will follow to undergo the various treatment options and the side effects associated with each form of treatment. Patients may wish to discuss their diagnosis and treatment with family and friends.

Scott’s Story

What he thought was an ordinary drive home from a baseball game turned out to be a defining moment in Scott’s life. He got the call: at age 61 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Scott, a retired orthopedic surgeon, began extensive research on prostate cancer and the various treatments. He spoke with a number of prostate cancer patients about their treatments and the problems they encountered. Around the same time, one of Scott’s friends attended a prostate cancer seminar and brought him back information about the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System.
